On October 20, an EF-3 tornado struck parts of northern Dallas and Richardson causing much destruction to businesses, homes, and schools in the affected area.
One of the most affected schools in Dallas ISD hit by the tornado was Thomas Jefferson High School. Classes for Jefferson High School students were back in session on Wednesday, after DISD moved students and staff to Thomas Edison Middle Learning Center for the remainder of the school year.
Jefferson’s homecoming week was held the week the tornado hit, with the football game against Spruce High School scheduled for Friday night.
However, due to tornado damage, Jefferson moved the football game to Saturday morning at Loos Stadium in Addison.
Before the homecoming game, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced a $1 Million donation towards Jefferson’s football program. A few hours later, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban announced on Twitter that he would match Jones’ donation.
Jones is hopeful that the donation will help DISD come back from this time of grief. “We’ve always known that a dollar is valuable because it can tangibly rebuild,” said Jones, “a dollar can get things done.”
