Denton's Newest Restaurant, the Flying Squirrel
DENTON - A new restaurant has opened up right by the University of North Texas and you’ve probably already heard of it by its unique name, the Flying Squirrel.
Located on the corner of Hickory and Fry street, this late night brunch themed restaurant has already become pretty popular with the students and is best known for its logo of Lucky the albino squirrel riding on Scrappy’s back.
Their most popular dish is the chicken and waffles, however they have an elaborate brunch, vegan, cocktail, and mocktail menu for whatever you’re in the mood for.
The owner, UNT alumni Adam Hasley, recently moved back to Denton after working for the National Restaurant Association in D.C. for a few years.
Hasley worked in the restaurant industry all through college and while working in D.C. he fell in love with it and decided he wanted to open his very own restaurant.
Hasley wanted his restaurant to be different, and since he is also a huge advocate for the LGBTQ+ community he wanted to open a restaurant that would embrace everyone.
“When I was at UNT there wasn’t really a hub or a spot for the LGBTQ+ community, and you know being s gay man myself I thought maybe there’s an opportunity there to really have a safe space for that community that’s right next to campus,” Hasley said.
The Flying Squirrel has already gotten so much amazing feedback about how nice the staff is, how welcoming the restaurant is, and how delicious their food is.
The restaurant is open until 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, so be sure to check it out and to try their chicken and waffles.
