DENTON, TX -- After staving off elimination on Wednesday in game two, the Mean Green will host the San Francisco Dons in the final game of the 2017-18 campaign in hopes of a home court win of the College Basketball Invitational on Friday.
North Texas won game two defeating the Dons 69-55 to improve to 13-6 at the Super Pit in Grant McCasland’s first year at the helm of the men’s basketball program. With the game two loss, San Francisco fell to 4-8 in road games this season.
After a 8-22 record last season, North Texas currently has a 19-18 record in hopes of a tournament win to solidify a stellar 2017-18 season. The Mean Green finished the regular season with a 8-9 conference record which was good for a Conference USA tournament appearance. North Texas fell in the opening round of the tournament to Louisiana Tech, but earned a bid to the CBI tournament. North Texas defeated South Dakota on the road, and defeated Mercer and Jacksonville State at the Super Pit to make it to the best of 3 championship round.
The San Francisco Dons have a 22-16 record and finished with a 9-9 conference record falling to Gonzaga in the second round of the West Coast Conference Championships. The Dons took down Colgate, Utah Valley, and Campbell all at home to clinch a spot in the final round. San Francisco was held to just 55 points in game two which was the first time the Dons were held to under 60 points since February 1st.
In game two in Denton, the Mean Green outscored the Dons in the paint with 42 of the 69 points for North Texas came inside the paint. The Dons only had 18 points in the paint. North Texas also out rebounded San Francisco 43-31.
Game 3 will decide the champion of the 2018 CBI tournament. Game 3 will start at 6pm in the Super Pit both teams looking for their first CBI championship. One last interesting note about this tournament is 2 of the last 3 winners of the CBI include Nevada and Loyola-Chicago, who have both made deep runs in this years NCAA men’s tournament.
